- runs around with his arms outstretched like a bird. This is new but oh so adorable! I think it started when the weather got to be so amazing. He'll just take off and start running and put his arms out and lean side to side like he's flying. It has been really windy here all month so other than his feet on the ground, I bet it does feel like he's flying.
- says "I'm just kidding" and "I'm just joking" all the time. He likes to make a statement and see how it is received. If people laugh he'll say something like "I knew you would think that is funny" but if I make a face or say that isn't right he'll claim he was just kidding.
- has gotten a much bigger (more normal sized) appetite. It used to be like pulling teeth to get him to eat half a sandwich for lunch and now he'll eat a whole one plus a side or 2. He's much more into breakfast and lunch than dinner though, and he'll rarely eat a good dinner.
- was at an age where he really got to enjoy Easter this year. Last year I don't think he really knew what was going on, but he was excited about leaving a snack for the bunny and even helped me decide exactly what it would be. His brother had been telling him how exciting it would be to get candy in his basket which of course was very motivating.
- has a very short temper. If he wants to do something his way and it starts to happen a different way, he is very quick to put on his angry face and start throwing and hitting things/people.
- loves to help me with our garden. He loves digging in the dirt (we even got him his own shovel and trowel to help plant our vegetables) so he didn't hesitate to jump right in when we got our pots and baby plants home. He loved filling the pots with soil and helping get the plants all watered.
- is a self-proclaimed "sugar monster". I had been calling him that for a while as a negative thing because he always wants foods with sugar. On most days he'll ask for cookies and candy for breakfast in hopes of me giving him the answer that he wants. Now he'll ask for them (or a Mento as soon as we get in the car) with the reasoning "I want a Mento because I'm the sugar monster". This boy is a handful.
- is getting really hard to motivate for things that we do everyday like change diapers (sure wish he'd just use the potty!), brush teeth, change clothes, etc. He puts up such a fight for each and every task so we've started trying to incorporate games. When he doesn't want to go upstairs for nap time, we play Follow The Leader to make it more fun. When he doesn't want to change his diaper we try Simon Says (which we have to start with a high-5 on each hand). Hopefully games will get us through this stage of defiance. I just have to summon my inner child a little more!
This month Blake:
- has been doing lots of detailed coloring. He loves to add as many colors as possible to whatever he is coloring, whether it is an abstract piece that he made on his own or something out of a coloring book. He got an adult coloring book for Easter that he likes to color with as many different colors as possible (and he likes to tell everyone which color crayon he's using at that moment because he can read all the color names).
- says "touch me and see what happens". This is a silly game he and Brett came up with and once you touch him he'll either run around like a rocket, or dance, or if he's on the bed he'll just "timber" and fall over. It's pretty funny as long as the surprise isn't me getting hit with something.
- loves dancing to Techno radio on Pandora. His favorite dance is the robot or his own variation of it and techno is the best type of music to guarantee he can do it to every song.
- is obsessed with the tv show Johnny Test. He's definitely into science and shows that have inventions involved with them and this show seems to fit that criteria as well. It seemed to be advertised toward older elementary aged kids but he seems to love it.
- great quote: "You didn't even get a molecule of that ball on me." (What 5 year old talks like this? So specific and so correct.)
- has been doing a lot more writing and he will do research on his own to figure out how to spell things. He totally shocked me the other day when he made a birthday card for Brett (while I was putting Brett down for his nap) and I asked him how he learned to spell "birthday" and he said he went and got a registration form out of his backpack that had a field for "birthdate" and he already knew how to spell "day" so he just figured it out. I'd be lying if I said I didn't tear up a bit with pride.
- reads everything. It is so cool to hear him say something like "hey, I didn't know Home Depot had an indoor lumber yard" because as we're pulling up he can read it on the side of the building. It is just so strange yet cool.
- loves helping water our garden. He pretty much reminds me everyday that it is time to water. Luckily potted plants need more water than in-ground ones so it seems to be working out well for now. I've never been able to grow anything because I end up over-watering (guess this is just my personality - control freak, haha). It has become clear that Blake has acquired this trait as well... poor boy.

The Easter Bunny left us a scavenger hunt and the boys had a great time with it! We left a snack for the Easter Bunny (carrot sticks and water) the night before, and in the morning the snack was gone and next to the plate was an egg that had "OPEN ME" written on it. Blake read the first couple clues and knew just where to go to find the next ones. It happened so fast (up and down the stairs a couple times) that I wasn't able to get a video. The final clue lead us to the baskets which were on top of the washing machine and the boys were so excited! Blake's favorite treats were a new box of 120 crayons, a small notebook (that he is really excited to practice his writing in), and fruit snacks. Brett loved his jewelry, fishing pole, and of course candy!
Brett loved finding the eggs all over the front and backyard again after Easter was over.
Our big project this month has been the container garden we started. The boys did a great job helping transfer our little plants into our big pots. Brett even wanted his own shovel (pink Superman).
We're looking forward to our tomatoes!
The previous owner of our apartment left 2 of these big rectangular pots so we cleaned them out and used one for some cilantro, zucchini, and cucumbers. We're still trying to find a yellow pepper plant.
This is our orange pepper plant and our carrots from seed (in the small pot). They've grown a lot since this picture and we'll have to transfer them to a larger pot soon.
