The Harvey Family: June and July {2019}

This month Brett:

continued his obsession with Minecraft and wanted to play Minecraft every waking moment.
learned to jump into the pool. Since Blake was getting a lot of attention for his swimming progress, Brett decided that jumping in was a skill he wanted to learn, so he just went for it and had the best time.
has really improved with his reading skills. He absolutely hates reading, but the Mason library put on a summer reading program where the kids would record their total time reading or being read to, and they could come in and redeem beads to put on a necklace to display their progress. This was such a cool idea for the kids that love to collect things. They were also entered into a drawing to win some bigger prizes, but since I didn't get a call, I assume we didn't win those.
went to a Kindergarten readiness camp at the library. While Blake went to one of his summer camps, I took Brett to a 1 hour camp for a week at the library. The parents were asked to wait outside while the kids made sure they had all the basics down before they started kindergarten in the fall. Brett had a good time even though he said he didn't learn anything (which is kinda what we needed to find out; this means he knows what he needs to for kindergarten.)
came up with this hilarious quote that I remembered to write down: "A minivan is pretty big, but on the other hand a mega van is really big, and I just made that up."

This month Blake:

finally learned to put his face in the water at the pool! After explaining the science behind why he wasn't going to drown, and being a little forceful, he finally did it and now he LOVES going underwater. He still holds his nose for now, but it is so awesome that he finally gets to enjoy that side of being in the water. He has really gotten a lot better with his swimming too, so maybe he'll be ready for some swimming lessons soon.
had his first recital performance. He did a Hip Hop/Jazz after school program all year and for the last session of the year, they worked on a dance to "Moves Like Jagger" by Kids Bop Kidz. He worked hard and came so far, and we are all so proud of him!
went to 2 summer camps at the beginning of the summer. His first camp was Camp Invention and it was at his school, MECC. They programmed little robots and thought about different ways to improve the Earth. He was so inspired every day when I picked him up. Since he still wants to be a farmer when he grows up, he was really excited about all the different things they came up with to improve farming. The second camp was a pottery camp at the YMCA. We hoped he would get to make actually pottery, but instead they were basically given some clay and told that they could make whatever they wanted. I guess camps at the Y aren't really full of instruction and learning, so we won't be doing them in the future.
had his mind set on getting his own computer. He wants to be able to play the PC version of Minecraft so he can download "mods" that will allow him to do all kinds of things that the stock version won't let you do.
