The Harvey Family: May {2016}

This month Brett:

loves kombucha. He always wants to try what I'm eating or drinking and he really took a liking to the grape flavored kombucha that we started making a couple months ago. As soon as he sees the bottles he'll demand his "boocha".
says ku-ro, yea, and Mighty all the time. When he sits down at the kitchen table to eat he asks for his Mighty Machines to be put on (Mighty, mighty, mighty!). He'll also say it as soon as Blake's show is over because we take lots of turns around here with everything (tv shows included). Then he'll let you know that the Roku (ku-ro) needs to be powered on. Then once I ask if he wants a certain episode he'll either say no or yea. The way he says "yea" sounds just like an adult. It makes me laugh every time.
had his 2 year well visit at the doctor. He passed his autism screening again with flying colors. The only question that he hadn't mastered was saying "me, I, my, etc." and then the following week he started doing that so no worries there. He is still a little peanut; he weighed in at 23 lb 12 oz (6%) and 33.25 inches tall (21%) with a head circumference of 19.5 in (72%). He is still getting taller and his head is growing so the doctor isn't worried. He just doesn't like to eat much right now. He'd rather eat his fruit pouches and get back to playing.
loves diggers. I think the Mighty Machines show has gotten him more into all the big machines but he has a special love for diggers (he calls them all diggy). He loves to pretend play with the ones we have around the house and pick up random small toys lying around.
learned how to use the Roku remote. Since he wants to switch which episode of Mighty Machines he's watching constantly, I taught him how to use all the buttons necessary to get to all the different episodes and also he can get to it from the home screen sometimes.
is really getting into using the Kindle. His favorite games are the puzzle ones but he's starting to get into the alphabet ones like the Elmo ABCs and the train game that parks at all the letter stations. He knows a few of his letters (B,F,O,R,S,W,X) but it's a work in progress because he doesn't find the point in learning letters.
knows a lot of his colors now. He is really into this show called Color Crew on Netflix and he seems to know the basic colors now including red, blue, yellow, green, pink, and brown. He sometimes knows orange and he calls purple, blue.
has been talking up a storm. He is into full sentences for sure and rarely stops talking. Blake has always been a big talker and Brett has to make sure he gets heard as well.

This month Blake:

plays a spit game with Brett in the car and they both laugh hysterically. It is so fun to watch them interact with each other but a lot of the time when they're in the car, there isn't much that they can do together so Blake just makes lots of funny faces and noises and they love to make spit sounds to each other. Blake makes the spit sound A LOT and I'm hoping we get past this phase soon because I'm tired of getting spit splatter on my face.
instead of asking for things, he says "I'm waiting for my ...". I'm not sure if he thinks he's already asked for something or if he thinks he just rules the world (I'm guessing the latter) but he'll just make lots of comments and not actually ask for what he wants. My life is so busy that it certainly could be the former though. Between trying to feed myself and everyone else there is a lot of noise around the house these days. I have to admit, I do like all the commotion and it was one of the things I remember so fondly of my childhood.
started phasing out sippy cups. We've started using straw cups and cups without lids around the house a lot more to try and phase out the sippy cups. We are hoping to stop any negative effects with growing teeth and speech issues by limiting how much he drinks out of them. We save the sippy cups for the car for now so hopefully that'll make it easier to pull the plug.
has become a little less interested in art and more into how things work and helping around the house. He likes to stand on a chair next to me while I'm washing the dishes or preparing food in the kitchen. He's always liked helping me with laundry and he'll even insist on putting away all the groceries that go in the pantry (by himself and no one is allowed to help). It's exciting seeing his independence and confidence grow!
has started coloring more. He's really gotten into coloring books because he's started holding the crayon the right way and he's getting much better at staying inside the lines. He likes to sign a lot of his artwork these days and he's getting really good at writing his name (while holding his pencil the right way)!
started watching Julius Jr on Netflix. This has been his go-to show this month. When he first wakes up in the morning he heads straight for the couch to sit and wake up slowly. He has to watch a tv show and drink his milk (pretty much has always done this). When he requests a tv show while he's eating in the kitchen it's almost always Julius Jr. Brett has even learned to say Julius and he'll ask Blake if he wants to watch it sometimes.
has been reading Easy Reader books before bed with Chris. He is getting to the point where he can almost read the books as long as they don't have any words that are too difficult. His list of words he can recognize by sight grow each day and I'm so proud of him! It's exciting to see him realize that he can read things on signs and out in the real world too.

Brett HAS to scoop the biggest scoops possible when he's eating with a spoon. It drives me nuts because he is almost guaranteed to spill it down the front of him with every spoonful.

My Mother's Day rose was so pretty!

All the "soup" that Blake likes to make with all the toys around the house. He finds containers and fills them with anything he can find and then puts all the filled containers next to each other on table, and shelves wherever he can find room.

Playing with hot wheels cars and ramps made from cardboard. Blake used to play with these all the time, so we decided it was time to introduce Brett to them.

Brett loves the painting easel.

And of course the quality control police had to step in.

Making beaded necklaces always seems like fun at first. Then Blake wants to hang it on the wall when he's done (huh?) and Brett just wants to empty all the beads, handful by handful, onto the table before getting bored with the whole situation and leaving me to clean up the mess.

Blake's new art gallery wall in his room. He wanted to hang art in his room to enjoy, not just have it on the mirror in the playroom, so we created a line made of yarn (hung on a push pin on each side) where he could hang up art with paper clips.
