The Harvey Family: February {2017}

This month Brett:

sings his sentences. When he is fed and rested, he is the happiest kid and he really likes to hear himself talk (and sing apparently). He'll repeat himself over and over in a sing-songy voice and it is super adorable... unless he is doing it to be annoying while other people are trying to watch tv.
carries his comfort objects everywhere. This month it was either his shovel and hammer or the goody bag from Blake's birthday party. He has to have them in his hands and by his side from the moment he wakes up. He brings them to the kitchen table, watches tv with them, and brings them on trips in the car.
wants to be a firefighter. Since Blake had a science birthday party and that's what Blake wants to be when he grows up (a scientist) Brett decided that he has to choose what he wants to be when he grows up. He mention it all the time. Even before bed he mentions it, and then when he's really tired he'll start to cry and say that he doesn't want to be a firefighter anymore.
is a total negotiator. If you say he can have 4 of something he'll immediately ask if he can have 5 or more, just because.
pretends to be a robot. I think he saw an episode of Daniel Tiger that was about dress up day and someone dressed up as a robot. He'll take off his socks, put them on his hands, and say "beep, boop, beep, boop" and walk around with his arms out in front of him.
has a couple things he says all the time: "I don't know mom", and "No, silly goose"

This month Blake:

got into the tv show Transformers: Rescue Bots. I thought Transformers sounded like something that he would find interesting because of his love of science but it turned out to be more about helping people which was kinda cool too. We're running out of good-hearted shows to watch on Netflix because I'm not ready to give into battle shows of good fighting evil.
started his new school. He was so excited to finally get to go to school again! He started on Valentine's Day so he got to start with a party and lots of sugar, oiy. It was super sweet though when he got home because he split all his goodies 50/50 with Brett (he is the best big brother!). He said he really enjoys his school and he still looks forward to going twice a week. I'm so glad that he gets to be around kids his own age again before jumping right into Kindergarten in the fall.
has a new found love of art and prefers it over tv a lot of the time. I think going to school rekindled it at first and then he got a bunch of new art supplies and crafts for his birthday so that got him into it even more. His biggest obsession at the moment are the fuse beads. You lay them all out on a board in a design and then iron them so they become solid. I wasn't sure he was old enough for them but he is a machine and has made at least 10 of them now. We ran out of beads and had to go get another huge bucket so we can decorate the whole house with them.
started having "quiet time" in the afternoons. Once Brett goes down for his nap, Blake lies down with his pillow on the couch next to me (while I get something accomplished) and he can either just rest or he can fall asleep if he's tired enough. Just forcing him to relax and give his eyes a break from tv, or crafts, or just life in general has been really good for him. He seems less anxious and it has given him a chance to catch up on sleep when he needs it. He has to stay there for 45 minutes and if he doesn't fall asleep then he can get up and go on with his day.
started using the computer a lot more. He likes to use the word processor to copy down sentences out of his reading books which has been great because it forces him to pay attention to letter case, punctuation, and sentence structure. He is reading 1st grade level books at the library so this is helping him put it all together.
has been writing a lot. He prefers to write in capital letters because he says he's better at those. He writes his first and last name well, but he needs more practice with using spaces between words.
