Blake - Week 3

Happy Due Date little man! We finally made it to Blake's due date (St. Patty's Day) and thankfully he's acting more like a normal newborn... I use thankfully loosely, but it's good that he's eating more and growing... even if that means he isn't sleeping as much. We're still tracking all his feedings and pees and poops so the doctor can get a good idea if there are any problems with how he's growing. Hopefully after our next doctor's visit on Monday we'll be in the clear to stop tracking it as closely.

With all the calorie counting we've been having to do for him, it's been tough to get newborn pictures taken. He doesn't really like to be on his belly so the photos that I had in mind didn't exactly work out. He only wanted to pose for a couple, so I decided to just take some in positions that he was comfy in. With all his tummy troubles, I decided to leave the diaper on. In just a couple short weeks, he's almost outgrown his little blue hat already! (For those that have asked, yes, I crocheted it for him a week or so before he was born and hope to make more in different colors as he gets older.) Sadly, it rarely gets cold enough in Florida to use them outside, so they're just for photos, haha.

This week, Blake:

• has started eating a whole lot more. It used to be a struggle to get him to eat 1.75 oz of pumped breast milk. Now he'll take down 3 oz and doesn't like to be stopped halfway through so I can burp him.
• has been lifting his head up more when I put him on my chest to try and relax him or put him to sleep.
• has been more awake during the daytime and has been slightly more cooperative with sleeping during the night.
• gets gas bubbles in his little belly a lot and it makes him so upset. This is the main time that he cries. Normally we feed him at regular intervals so the crying isn't typically because of hunger.
• likes to save a full bladder for diaper changing time... oh boys...
• has been grunting and groaning a lot more... maybe related to passing gas but it sounds so funny.
• has been doing well with switching between the bottle and breast since we were told to supplement with formula to get his weight up. Plus it's the only way to measure how much food he's getting so we do bottles of pumped breast milk at night as well. Now that he's eating more at one time, we're actually up to the acceptable range of what he's supposed to be eating on a daily basis, woohoo!
• is so funny when we feed him the bottle. The lactation consultant showed us how to tease him by moving his head side to side to rub his upper lip on the nipple so he will open wide to latch. Now he does it on his own (like ferociously) when we bring the bottle nipple to his lips... so hysterical.
• still has his umbilical cord stump. It is hanging on by just a thread so hopefully it'll fall off soon so we can start tummy time.
