Blake - Week 2

It has taken forever to get this post together. Obviously, the only free time we get is when Blake is sleeping, but that's when we're supposed to be sleeping so the blog has been neglected a bit. Time sure seems to be flying as we look back at the past 2 weeks. Is our little boy 2 weeks old already?! It seems like keeping him fed and changing his diapers is a full time job round the clock. Our biggest challenges this week were made apparent yet again at the doctor's visit on Thursday. The bili count went back up to 12.9 and his weight dropped back below 7lb. Because of this we had to continue with operation shove food down Blake's throat, which basically means we force feed him every 3 hours. We have to wake him up (which is totally counter-intuitive since typically waking a sleeping baby is a bad move) and feed him which can take up to an hour, and sometimes longer.

It seems like as he gets older, he's started keeping his eyes open a little bit more during the day. He's also been awake a couple more hours a day than his first week of life.

This week, Blake:

• scratched his face so many times with his little nails that we had to put mittens on him.
• has somehow taught mommy and daddy to speak in 3rd person.
• has decided that he sleeps best in the carseat but the doctor said we shouldn't let him sleep in there on a regular basis because it is bad for his oxygen levels.
• has the cutest smiles when he is passing gas. Hopefully soon we'll get to see real smiles.
• likes to sit in his Rock 'n Play with his legs straight out.
• has given us a lot of practice changing diapers. We were clueless just a short 2 weeks ago, but now feel like pros.
• startles himself while he's sleeping and his arms and legs fly straight out.
• makes a lot of little squeaks and squeals while he is in a light sleep.
• likes to open his eyes and look at lights. He likes looking out the window when it's sunny out and is content looking at overhead lights inside when it's dark outside.
• likes to play with his tongue while feeding. Whether the bottle or breastfeeding, he likes to push out whatever he has in his mouth with his tongue. Mommy doesn't like this very much when it is during breastfeeding (see, that 3rd person thing again).
• has a blocked tear duct we think and his right eye is super goopy, but we're trying to clear it out.

On our way to the hospital on week 1 to meet with the lactation consultant and make sure the clicking sounds were ok... they turned out just to be the sound he makes with his tongue when he swallows milk.

This is how Blake likes to sleep, all sprawled out like a froggy.

He is getting so long and skinny, and he loves having at least one hand in his mouth or at least right next to his face.

Please ignore me. This is what sleep deprived looks like. But it is much more tolerable when I have the little munchkin lounging on me... with his mittens. =)
